From October to March, the Fraser Valley gets wet, and for businesses that makes commercial floor care more important than ever. Everything outside ends up on your floors.
Mud, grit, standing water and the occasional de-icer during a cold snap all get tracked through your front door hundreds of times a day. Left alone, they scratch finishes, stain carpets and create slip hazards. Before long, floors that looked fine in September can need costly repairs or replacement.
The good news is that most winter floor damage is preventable. Here is how to protect your floors through the rainy season.
Why Winter Is So Hard on Commercial Floors
Grit is the biggest problem. Small particles of sand and dirt act like sandpaper under foot traffic. On hard floors, they dull the finish and leave fine scratches. On carpet, they work deep into the fibres and wear them down from the inside.
Moisture makes everything worse. Wet floors spread dirt further, soak into grout and carpet backing, and create a real slip-and-fall risk for staff and visitors. In an office, store lobby or strata entrance, that is a liability you do not want.
Start at the Door: Build a Matting System
Most dirt that reaches your floors comes through the front door. Stop it there and everything else gets easier.
A well-planned matting system can catch most of the dirt and water before it reaches your main floors.
Adjust Your Cleaning Schedule for the Season
The cleaning plan that works in July often falls short in November. Consider these changes for the wet months:
If you are not sure how often your space needs attention, our guide on how often an office should be professionally cleaned is a good starting point.
Commercial Floor Care Tips by Floor Type
Vinyl and VCT: Sweep or dust-mop daily and damp-mop with a neutral cleaner. Watch for dull, worn paths near doors, a sign the protective finish needs attention.
Tile and grout: Grout soaks up dirty water and darkens fast in winter. Regular scrubbing keeps it from staining permanently.
Concrete: Sealed concrete in warehouses and shops still needs regular sweeping. Grit left in place wears down the sealer over time.
Carpet: Vacuum entry carpets daily in the rainy season. Deal with spots quickly, and book a deep carpet clean this fall before the heaviest rain arrives.
Hardwood and laminate: Standing water is the enemy. Dry spills right away and keep absorbent mats at every entrance.
Start the Season With a Fall Deep Clean
The best time to protect your floors is before the wet season peaks. A deep clean this fall removes summer’s built-up grime, refreshes worn finishes on hard floors, scrubs grout clean and deep-cleans carpets. Your floors go into the rainy months in their best condition, and daily cleaning has far less to fight.
